VOCABULARY: FALL #1

Expository- intended to explain or describe something
There is such thing as formal expository prose.
Composition- the way in which a whole or mixture is made up
Within a high school, there are many social compositions.
Assuage- make an unpleasant feeling less intense
The results assuaged the fear of flunking
Decadence- moral or cultural decline as characterized by excessive indulgence in pleasure or luxury
The man, along with his friends, denounced Western decadence
Hackneyed- of a phrase or idea lacking significance through having been overused
Everybody nowadays knows some of the hackneyed old sayings.
Coalition- an alliance for combined action
The Democrats were able to govern in coalition with 3 other parties.
Transcend- be or go beyond the range or limits of something abstract, typically a conceptual field or division.
Throughout time there were always many issues transcending party politics.
Meritorious- deserving reward or praise
A trophy is an example of a reward for meritorious
Lurid- very vivid in color
The shirt he wore yesterday was lurid.
Petulant- (of a person or their manner) childishly sulky or bad-tempered
At times everyone can be moody and petulant.
